I was listening to the Worship Central podcast this week, where Nicky Gumbel was talking about priorities of ministry. He believes that the priority order is:
- Your relationship with God
- Your relationship with your husband/wife
- Your relationship with your children
- Your paid employment
- Your church ministry
This really spoke to me. I think its really easy to get these the wrong way round, and it can be really easy for church ministry to take over, to the detriment of our relationships, even with God! I guess I was really challenged about how I see my paid employment, and the importance I put on this.
I personally would swap the last two around as I think serving God is more important than doing that job. But maybe that is just me.
I guess the thought is that perhaps you can serve God in doing your job just as well (if not perhaps even better) than you can serve him in doing stuff around church. As someone who works for the church and is always looking for people to do stuff, I know I’d much rather they had serving the church as their highest priority but I think that, actually, Gumbel has it right.
